Lesson 5.5 3 min

Ask Carepatron AI

Beyond AI Scribe: **Ask** takes plain-language requests inside a note. Summarise, restructure, draft documents or pull details from uploaded files, using the note and client you're working in.

Outcome
Drafts, summaries and extractions from Ask AI that you can insert straight into the note.
note → Ask → type a request
Open in Carepatron ↗
Before you start
  • A note open on the client you want to ask about
  • A transcript in the note, if you want an AI prompt embedded in a template to run (lesson 5.1)

Where Ask AI lives

Inside a note, Ask sits in the AI bar at the bottom, next to Start AI Scribe. Click it and the Ask AI side panel opens. You can also select text in the note and click Ask to work on just that part.

Type a plain-language request. Ask AI uses the note you're in, including its transcript and attachments, and can draw on the client's recent notes when your request needs them. Insert the response into the note, copy it, or just read it and move on.

What you can ask for

  • Summarise a long note for a discharge letter.
  • Restructure a transcript into SOAP format.
  • Draft a referral letter or treatment plan from the goals discussed.
  • Extract key info from an uploaded document: PDF, PNG, JPG or plain text, up to three files at a time and under 5MB each.
  • Compare what's changed between sessions.
  • Rewrite clinical language into plain English for a client-facing summary.

Specific prompts beat vague ones. The examples below are starting points.

AI prompts inside templates

For recurring tasks, embed the prompt in the template instead of typing it every time: in the template editor, type / → AI smart prompt. Prompts combine three building blocks:

  • Placeholders in [brackets] auto-fill with real data.
  • Instructions in (parentheses) guide how the AI handles the content.
  • Verbatim text in quotes stays exactly the same every time.

Prompts run when the template is applied to a note that has a transcript.

Plan rules

AI note-taking is included on every plan, Free included. Free comes with a lifetime allowance of 1 million AI tokens, which doesn't reset. Plus and Advanced have no token cap.

If you write most of your notes with AI, keep an eye on your usage on Free. When the allowance runs out, Ask AI shows an upgrade prompt.

Prompts that work

Five Ask AI prompts worth pasting in.

Each is short, specific, and works without a long preamble. Adapt to your context.

Discharge letter

Summarise this note as a discharge letter to the client's GP. Three short paragraphs, clinical tone, no bullet points.

Plain English

Rewrite this note in plain English at a year 8 reading level. Keep it under 200 words and don't drop any clinical content.

Comparing sessions

Compare today's session with this client's previous sessions. What's changed, what's the same, and what should we focus on next time?

Treatment plan

Draft a six-week treatment plan from the goals we discussed today. SMART format, with a brief rationale for each goal.

Extract from PDF

Read the uploaded PDF (an imaging report). Extract the key findings into a bullet list I can paste into the assessment section.

Common questions
Where do I find Ask AI?

Inside a note, click Ask in the AI bar at the bottom of the editor, next to Start AI Scribe. The Ask AI side panel opens with the current note as context.

What context does Ask AI have?

The current note, including its transcript, diagnoses and attachments, plus the client's name and contact details. It can also look up the client's recent notes when your request needs them, if you have access to them, and read any files you upload to the panel.

What file types can I upload?

PDF, PNG, JPG and plain text files, up to three at a time. Keep each file under 5MB, because larger files can't be read. Useful for imaging reports, letters from other providers, or photos of handwritten notes.

Do AI prompts in templates need a transcript?

Yes, prompts embedded in templates run on the transcript text. If the note has no transcript (e.g. a pure-typed note with no dictation or recording), the prompt won't have anything to work with.

What's the difference between Ask AI and AI smart prompts?

Ask AI is conversational, one-off questions in the side panel, ad-hoc, no setup. AI smart prompts are embedded in templates, they run automatically every time the template applies to a note with a transcript. Use Ask AI for exploration, AI smart prompts for repeatable tasks.

Which plan includes AI features?

AI note-taking is on every plan, Free included. Free has a lifetime allowance of 1 million AI tokens that doesn't reset; Plus and Advanced have no token cap.
